DIRECTOR OF CLOUD OPERATIONS

The Director of Cloud Operations position is a critical position for SmashFly’s growth.   Our growing customer base means that there is more data, more processing, and an ever-expanding set of features that the Cloud Operations team needs to deploy and support.   In addition to helping keep the lights on, this role will help transition SmashFly fully into an AWS or Azure Cloud.  If you’ve gone through building out a resilient, highly available and secure cloud infrastructure, and desire to do this again, here are more details about the position. 

What you will be working on:

The ideal candidate has a track record of building, evolving, and maintaining large, resilient, highly available, and scalable cloud infrastructure.   You will be putting your experience as a creative thinker, learner, builder, teacher, problem solver, team builder, and people developer to support our current co-location data center hosting our current production environment, and to transition the environment to a next generation infrastructure.  Additional responsibilities for this hands-on technical role will include:

  • Partner with Engineering, and members of the Leadership team to define a vision and build a hybrid / next generation cloud architecture, which spans across global data centers and extends the hosting environment to either AWS or Azure
  • Partner with the IT team to manage existing server, network, bandwidth, and storage capacity.   Monitor and forecast usage, and request additional capacity when needed
  • Partner with Engineering team to meet their needs for computing environments, build and release processes, site reliability evaluations for new features, security assessment of new features, monitoring of services uptime, and service automation needs
  • Define and ensure security standards and compliance are met
  • Develop, manage, and maintain system and service deployment scripts for Production, User Acceptance Testing, Staging, Hot Fix, Development, QA, Sales, Training, and DR environments. Your ability to get us to a CI/CD process will be a huge plus
  • Lead Service Management implementation for the Cloud environment, partnering with Engineering to improve overall customer experience, MTTR, up-time, availability of services, and resilience
  • Update DR strategy for full failover of systems into the cloud, and help with the testing of the DR plan on a quarterly basis
  • Provide automated monitoring of system availability, performance, and uptime for internal and external customers
  • Be a point person for customer RFPs, including security RFPs
  • Be a focal resource for helping with prospect and customer security audits
  • Strong focus and adherence to change management
  • Build a high performance team centered around a “Cloud” first preference, and foster a culture of accountability, innovation, collaboration and fun
  • Support on-call rotation

 Skills and Experiences that Most Excite Us:

  • 5+ years of experience as a Sr./Principal/Architect Windows Engineering.  Additional experiences with Linux will elevate you to star status
  • Deep understanding of IIS, Microsoft SQL server, TFS, VSO, and RM2017
  • 5+ years of experience supporting a SaaS product that scales beyond a million transactions per year, and over 2 TB of data storage growth per year
  • 5+ years of experience supporting a high availability system (99.99%+ uptime)
  • Experience with building zero downtime systems is highly desirable
  • Deep knowledge of scripting skills such as Powershell, Ruby, or Python
  • Build and release automation tools such as RM2017, and/or Jenkins/Hudson
  • Experience with Puppet, Chef or Docker
  • Strong working knowledge of VMWare, SAN, VPC, SDN, New Relic or similar monitoring services, Splunk, and SIEM tools
  • Experience with building a high performing Devops / Cloudops team, and the ability to utilize metrics to measure effectiveness
  • Demonstrated ability to tactically lead multiple projects, and defining a strategic vision for the function
  • Experience with ITIL
  • Strong problem solver including the ability and leadership skills to collaborate and direct teams to solve complex environmental problems
  • Fast-paced startup environment experience that deals with ambiguity and budget prioritizations
