The SmashFly band, aka The Smashers, formed as many great musical groups do: passionate people from different backgrounds discovered in one another a shared love of music. They didn’t seek glory or riches. They merely sought to unwind, entertain their friends and bond by paying tribute to some of their favorite artists and songs. Tim Hennessy organized the first performance, staged in the lounge of SmashFly’s Concord office. Since then, The Smashers has become a staple of SmashFly’s social gatherings. They aren’t “good,” per say. But that was never the point. SmashFly’s band provides a stage for our team members to showcase hidden talents, to break the ice (new hires are encouraged to perform) and to laugh at ourselves and each other without even a hint of judgement.
The band helps us give life to and reinforce our core values. Half of our performers have never sung aloud or played an instrument. It takes a great deal of trust to stand up in front of your peers and sing, knowing full well performing in front of people can be embarrassing. Everyone is amazed when they walk off stage feeling anything but embarrassed. Seasoned musicians use their knowledge to guide newbies, fellow performers use teamwork to support them and compensate for their lack of experience, and Smashers in the crowd respond with such passionate enthusiasm that any vulnerability is replaced with confidence. The Smashers are one of our fondest traditions and part of what makes our company a team.
